Qualitative Reasoning Skills

Class: Probability and Statistics
Evidence: Survey
Reflection: Probability and Statistics was a great introduction to using qualitative reasoning skills to collect and analyze data. For our final project we had to collect data, analyze it, and run correlations to see if it matched out hypothesis. For our survey we chose to see what sort of correlation there was between G.P.A., the average amount a days skipped per block, and the average number of days one consumes alcohol. Through these means we were able to collect qualitative data and reflect quantitatively on it.

Critical Thinking

Class: Environmental Economics (taken abroad) equivalent to Global Environmental Economics
Evidence: Research Paper, Case Study
Reflection:I took Environmental Economics abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. It applied well known economic theories to specific environmental problems around Europe and the world. Our final research paper required us to use some of these economic theories to explore and discuss the ability of a particular European country to adapt and commit to green house gas reductions. Along with the final research paper, we examined specific case studies and applied those to larger scale environmental economics.

EV Proficiencies

  • Interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving
  • Understanding my connection to the environment
  • Reading and critically evaluating environmental literature
  • Written Communication
  • Oral Communication
  • Qualitative Reasoning Skills
  • Quantitative Reasoning Skills
  • Critical Thinking
  • "Field" Skills
  • Sense of Place

Sense of Place

Class: Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (taken abroad) equivalent to Environmental Ethics
Evidence: Topic Paper, Stakeholder Report
Reflection: I took this class abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark and it focused mainly on the application and understanding of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The idea of being a well rounded, morally driven, environmentally conscientious person and businessmen really hammered home the idea of respecting and appreciating the earth and its resources. It certainly helped me better understand my role in the greater environmental picture and how I, personally, can make simple decisions like where I shop, who I support, and how to integrate environmental business models into everyday life.

"Field" Skills

Class: Environmental Inquiry
Evidence: Monument Creek Field Work Results and Lab Report
Reflection: Environmental Inquiry provided an integrated approach to collecting and analyzing simple and complex data acquired from the field. One of the first projects assigned in the class required us to actively test water quality in Monument Creek, above and below the two waste water treatment plants. Being that the Environmental Policy major has few data collection driven requirements, this opportunity was a great hands on way to grasp the basics and get a quick tutorial on how to go about field work.
